COURSE SYLLABUS FOR THE SUMMER 2020 SEMESTER
MATH 243.201: CALCULUS III
Instructor: Patrick Wenkanaab
E-mail: patrick.wenkanaab@morgan.edu
Class Days/Time: MTWRF from 1:00 pm to 2:50 pm
Where: Remote Instruction
Virtual Office Hours: MTWRF from 3 to 4 pm (Virtual Office Link)
Course Description and Objectives: It is the purpose of this course to introduce you to such important concepts as partial differentiation, directional derivatives, gradients and line integrals, multiple integrals, applications, Green’s Theorem and Stokes' Theorem. Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to apply various problem-solving strategies to find solutions to a variety of real-life problems. Furthermore, the student will have acquired the necessary skills required for other higher levels of mathematics.
Required Textbook:
CALCULUS, Early Transcendentals 2nd Edition by Briggs, William | Cochran, Lyle | Gillett, Bernard
Recommended Textbook:
Calculus, 8th Edition by James Stewart
Calculator: You may use a Texas Instruments TI-30XA calculator on the tests, quizzes, Mid-Term and Final Exams. Use of an unauthorized calculator will result in a grade of F and possible disciplinary action.
Course Structure: This course is conducted remotely, which means you do not have to be on campus to complete any portion of it (Due to the pandemic). Apart from the course being conducted by remote instruction in Canvas, all your assignments/quizzes/tests will be done using the teaching and learning platform MyMathLab. You will have to create MyMathLab account and register using your class key that will be provided to you by the course instructor.
MyMathLab Registration: Click here to download the registration instructions to create your MyMathLab account.
Computer Requirement: You will need to have a reliable computer and internet access from start to finish of the course to be able to participate in class activities.
Announcements: Announcements will be posted in CANVAS on a regular basis. They will appear on your CANVAS dashboard when you log in and/or will be sent to you directly through your Morgan emails. Please make sure to check them regularly, as they will contain any important information about upcoming class activities or class concerns.
Course Participation Policy: Participation is essential to your success in this course. In remote education courses you are required to participate just as if you were in a face-to-face course. This means that in order to get full credit for participation, you will have to join the conference for lectures synchronously (i.e. by the scheduled class time). Consistent failure to participate in class will result in a grade of ‘F’ in the course. Also note that if you join the conference, you should plan to remain in the conference in the entire period. Try to avoid joining late or leaving early. Class rollcall will be taken in every session. Also note that no more than 3 unexcused absences will qualify a student to receive a passing grade.
Academic Honesty & Acceptable Classroom Behavior: The work submitted in this course is expected to be your own. Forms of cheating/academic dishonesty include (but are not limited to): communicating with another student during a test or quiz (this includes giving information to another student as well as receiving that information), using an unauthorized calculator, using unauthorized material during a test, quiz, or exam, and communicating contents of a test, quiz or exam to another student. We reserve the right to penalize a student for academic dishonesty by assigning the student an F for the course. In addition, further disciplinary action through the university will be taken. Please be aware that disciplinary action through the university could result in suspension or expulsion.
Make-up Policy: Make-up assignments, tests or quizzes will typically not be given. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the instructor if the request is made prior to the assessment date and valid documentation is provided. In the event a make-up is given, it will cover the same sections of the text as the class assessment but the format may not be the same.
Instructor’s grading policy:
Assignments/Quizzes/Tests 300 points 30%
Class Participation, and Conduct 100 points 10%
Mid-Term Exam 300 points 30%
Final Exam 300 points 30%
Total 1000 points 100%

Note: I encourage every student to review their scores on MyMathLab regularly and to report to the instructor any discrepancies in their scores or any missing scores after every graded assignment/quiz/test. This should be done ahead of time or before midterm/final grades are posted. Students are also encouraged to meet with the professor to discuss their standing in the course so that issues or concerns they have can be addressed promptly.
