Academic Integrity Policy:
The Department of Physics at Morgan State University has developed an academic dishonesty policy that aims to promote a culture of academic integrity by imposing sanctions on students who actively commit dishonest offenses while also working to undermine academic. Reports of all offenses will be made to the Academic Integrity Committee (AIC). A full version of the Physics Department Academic Integrity Policy can be viewed on Canvas.
This policy has three levels of sanctions:
Level 1
Offenses:
- First offenses of cheating, plagiarism, deception/lying and fabrication.
- Particularly egregious offenses, offenses that can be proven to have been committed intentionally, and offenses involving an exam, test, or semester long project the offense may be upgraded to Level 2.
Consequence:
- The student will receive a 0 for the assignment in question.
- Instructor will make a formal report of the incident to the AIC.
Level 2
Offenses:
- sabotage/abuse of academic materials, stealing, bribery or paid services, impersonation, contract cheating, repeat offenses (any offense committed by a level 1 offender), group offenses (offenses involving more than one student), and offenses dealing with tests/quizzes/exams, especially final exams.
Consequence:
- The student will receive a failing grade (F) for the course.
- The student will no longer be able to register for a course being taught by that instructor.
- Instructor will make a formal report of the incident to the AIC.
Level 3
Offenses:
- Repeat offenses by level 2 offenders
Consequence:
- The student will receive a failing grade (F) for the course.
- The student will no longer be able to register or sit in any classes offered by the Physics department at Morgan State University.
- Instructor will make a formal report of the incident to the AIC.
- The student will also meet with the AIC in person in order for them to determine how best to deal with the student’s continued misdeeds.
- Meet with the student’s dean and advisor.
For all offenses, an instructor will submit an Academic Dishonesty Form to the AIC. Definitions and examples of the offenses listed above can be found in the MSU Academic Dishonesty policy. It is the instructor’s prerogative to identify offenses. Familiarize yourself with these definitions. Do not do yourself the disservice of failing a course because of dishonesty.
