Format of Written Assignments

In this course, you will be doing a lot of writing! For some folks, this may be the most substantial amount of writing you have ever done for a course. Every student comes to this course with different writing abilities, preferences for writing, and writing styles. Your writing will get better because of this course.

When you submit a written assignment in this course it should have the following qualities:

  1. Be a Microsoft Word Document (.doc or .docx)
  2. Uses a 12 pt font
  3. Times New Roman
  4. Has 1" margins
  5. Is double-spaced
  6. Has your name, date, and the title of the assignment at the top
  7. Has zero spelling or grammar mistakes

This may seem like a lot, but you will get the hang of it! I use word-counts instead of page-counts in this course, so adjusting font, margins, size of the font, is futile in getting you to the correct length of each assignment.

You will notice that I expect your writing to be error free. So, no spelling or grammar mistakes.

There are three writing resources I want to point you towards to achieve your writing goals:

  1. Morgan State University Writing Center Links to an external site. - The Writing Center at Morgan State is terrific! They prefer you make an appointment, but they do take walk-ins. They will help you review the assignment, make sure you are fulfilling all of the requirements of the assignment, and help make sure you're writing is clear and error free.
  2. Brainfuse Links to an external site. - This site offers 24/7 writing help and has a writing lab. If you are a member of your local public library, you will most likely have access to this resource. Check your local library's web page to see if it is available where you live.
  3. Grammarly  Links to an external site.- Grammarly is a more advanced "spell check" than what is in Microsoft Word.  This is a website that is mostly available in the Chrome internet browser. There is a free version and a paid version.
